Okay so picture this - you’ve just gotten off work, all your friends want to celebrate John’s promotion (or something like that). Where do you go? The local? But it’s a bit dingy - TAB screens everywhere, 60 year old men desperately clutching their Tooheys New. No, you need somewhere celebratory - good looking but not gauche, a wide enough range to suit everyone (cause Dave loves pale ales and Karen only drinks dark beer) and with enough space for you all to sit down. Don’t worry, we’ve got this covered. Here’s Sydney On Tap’s Top 5 “Special Occasion” bars;
No. 5:
VUE, Bondi
This place gets number 5 - it would be higher, but it’s in Bondi which can be a trek for those special occasions that fall on weekdays. If you do decide to make the trip though, this place is fantastic. Only 1 tap but really you’re there for the amazing view, the smart décor and relaxed vibe you get from the bars of Bondi. A tapas based menu so perfect for groups of people. Definitely one to keep in mind next time you need a go-to “special occasion” place.
No. 4:
The Cut, The Rocks
Less about groups of people here & more about the anniversaries and birthday dinners. Very fancy, equally expensive so you better bring the big wallet. Only 1 tap here too but again, it’s not about that, this is fine dining (by our standards anyway). All wood and animal skin with a meaty grill menu to match.
No. 3.
Ananas, The Rocks
After walking around the rocks a bunch one day, visiting the mostly disappointing old pubs we stumbled into Ananas. First of all Ananas means pineapple in French or something (thanks Suni) and so as you would imagine it looks like a party in there. But a real classy party, go youtube “Bad On You” by Sy Smith, that’s how Ananas sounds. Festive, colourful and good beers on tap, what more could you want?
No. 2:
The Bar At The End Of The Wharf, The Rocks
Yeah The Rocks is fancy ok, deal with it. Now 1st and 2nd are kind of a draw cause they’re quite different. Wharf Bar is the kind of place you could take anyone and they’d enjoy it just fine. The view is the best we’ve seen, they have a decent dinner menu and a classy but comfortable vibe. It made it to our Top 5 Sydney Bars for good reason, it’s an up-market safe bet.
No. 1:
The Lowenbrau, The Rocks
A German beer-hall style bar was always going to be our number 1 for something spesh. Steins of German beer, huge chicken schnitzels and life-threateningly fatty pork knuckles, tick tick tick. You could take a group, you could have a fun date, you could sit in the corner and clap along with the Oompah band if you really wanted too. No matter what you’re going to have a good night.
