Four awesome beers, a beer label designing comp, a chance to chat with the brewers and singing happy birthday to some bloke called Jim – Craft Beer Fight Club, get amongst it.
Young Henrys head brewer, Sam Fuss wisely chose the popular Newtowner Summer Ale and Big Balls IPA to go head to head with the highly decorated Two Birds Brewing this Sunday. Two Birds Co-owner, Dani Allen decided on their Neneh Cherry Saison and past fight club winner, Taco Wheat Beer which ended up winning the fight for Two Birds again!
The first beer of the day was the Neneh Cherry with its iconic cloudy pink colour. We found sweet fruit aromas and similarly dynamic, sweet, cherry-passionfruit flavours with lower bitterness in this Saison. Neneh is especially interesting as all the profits go directly to the Australian Pink Boots Society whose goal is to empower women in the craft beer industry.
The second beer tasted was one close to our hearts, Newtowner. When compared with the Cherry Saison we found it dryer, lighter and more hop driven but in a subtle and very drinkable way. Good amount of hops on the nose too. Sam dropped a lil knowledge on us all - Newtowner was actually brewed to celebrate Newtown’s 150th birthday.
After visiting Mexico for two weeks, Two Birds’ two owners were inspired to brew our third beer, Taco. Remembering all the fresh lime, coriander and corn flavours they encountered while away they decided to add them in to a wheat beer. We were apprehensive at first as we’re not huge wheat beer fans BUT with a generous balance of hops everything came together to create a really refreshing beer.
Young Henrys final beer was of course the Big Balls IPA, brewed as a homage to the late Bon Scott, former front man to the ‘balls out’ rock and roll royalty, ACDC who ironically (as the legend goes) only had one testicle. Smell wise we got florally hop aromas with a hint of sourness. The taste was of medium sweetness with fruity hops followed by the classic bitter IPA aftertaste, however, not overpowering. Nailed it.
We got a chance to have a gab to Sam and Dani inbetween tastings. Sam, who is responsible for sharing Newtowner with the other Australian states (you’re welcome) informed us that one of her main missions is to expand the brewery. In her two years on the job she’s already fit in four more tanks, ten thumbs up.
Talking to Dani, we noticed she was drinking a soda water instead of a beer, but for all the right reasons – she told us she’s expecting a baby boy! Congratulations Dani. Luckily for Two Birds fans she said the brewery will not be losing any attention.
