Last Thursday night, SydneyOnTap dropped by the Keg & Brew in Surry Hills to check out the launch of Sydney Brewery’s brand new Schwartzenlager IPL. A collaboration between Sydney Brewery and the Keg & Brew and Dove & Olive, the award-winning local brewers promise “you’ll be back” to try it again (editor’s note: haha good one). We were greeted at the door by Michael Capaldo, who has spent 6 years as head brewer for Sydney Brewery. We were offered a few samples as we discussed its creation. Using Californian hops, Sydney Brewery have aimed to create a lager that is at once bitter and loaded with fruity aromas. Richard Feyn, marketing manager for Sydney Brewery, adds that they are seeking to create beers that truly reflect the personality of Sydney’s suburbs: “Think local, drink local.” After sharing the brew with the Sydney Brewery family, we can confirm that their beer captures a sense of local solidarity and good company. The beer itself glistens like the well-oiled muscles of an action movie star, and holds you in its warm embrace, enticing you with its light, crisp flavour. And, with its 6.4% alcohol content, Scwartzenlager sneaks up on you and bombards you with raw strength, much like its Austrian namesake. We left the Keg & Brew satisfied but wanting more. So what does Sydney Brewery make of their newest creation? In the words of the delivery driver Raz, “it’s a big man’s beer…and I’m a big man.” (Raz did not mean to be exclusionary - he fully endorses women, men, and anyone outside the gender binary drinking this beer whether they are big in stature or big in heart). Only 30 kegs were brewed for this limited release, so if you’re itching to sample the lagernator, hop on down to the Keg & Brew or Dove & Olive. And, of course, check out Sydney Brewery’s impressive catalogue of local beers. Sydney Brewery is based in the Hunter Valley & World Square, and their Lovedale Lager and Sydney Cider have been awarded Champion Beer and Champion Cider respectively at the Sydney Royal Beer & Cider Show 2015. As always, feel free to hit us up on Facebook or Instagram to keep up to date with what’s going on at Sydney On Tap. | |
