The first thing I noticed about the Grifter Brewery bar was the wideness of it all. You come out of a tiny walkway into an open warehouse space, one corner converted into an open-bricked, well lit sanctuary. We were grateful to be invited down on the first day that it opened, but I had my concerns - would there be enough people there in the early hours of the afternoon to get good photos? How good would the bar actually be? These were immediately assuaged, with every new person who walked in (there were plenty) going to greet a group, mingling, saying hello to a friend then moving onto a larger group. From the vibe of the bartenders to the pictures hanging on the walls, the Grifter Brewery Bar was a welcoming place where people could mingle.
Aesthetically, the Grifter embodies a very down-to-earth, traditionalist craft beer experience. Located in the bowels of Marrickville (next to the Vic on the park), it’s a callback to the prohibitionist days. Walk down a driveway, turn left, follow the barrels into a dark corridor, and emerge into a light-filled, rustic space offering quality drinks. Given how new it is, we were impressed by the details - pictures hanging on the wall, the big “Grifter Brewing” mural on the wall, and the exceptionally cool taps on a tiled backdrop, dispensing any of Grifter’s top notch brews.
Overall, we think the brewery bar is a big step forward for the company. Their Watermelon Pilsner for Sydney Craft Beer Week was fantastic and since then they’ve moved from strength to strength. We’re huge supporters of brewery bars of all shapes and sizes, and this is a great one to check out.
The Grifter Brewing Co is located at 1/391 Enmore Rd, Marrickville. They’re only open on Fridays and Saturdays, from 12pm to 9pm. This is not a place to get hammered with your mates while watching the football, but it’s a welcoming space filled with cool people and good beer and at the end of the day, that’s what the craft beer community is all about.
As usual, feel free to check us out on Facebook or Instagram to keep up to date with what’s happening in craft beer around Sydney (and also hear about cool new places to drink & have a generally fantastic time).
